FIDE publishes the communique of the Presidential Board meeting that was held on 6-7 July 2002 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Doha, Qatar.

RITZ-CARLTON, DOHA, QATAR, 6-7 JULY 2002


Presidential Board of FIDE met 6-7 July 2002 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Doha, Qatar. The Board reviewed the Prague Unity Plan and unanimously resolved to endorse the concept of the unity plan while anxiously awaiting the details of the proposed business plan. It congratulated the FIDE President H.E. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov for his personal efforts, which led to the agreement signed inter alia by both Grandmasters Gary Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik, in which FIDE was rightfully recognized as custodian of the World Chess Championship title.

With respect to the future of the Grand Prix series, the Board noted the proposal of the All India Chess Federation to organize another Grand Prix event in November-December 2002. It requested FIDE Vice President P.T. Ummer Koya to formalize the bid.

The Board confirmed the decision of the Steering Committee to forward the protests of the Spanish, German and French Chess Federations with respect to the penalty fees for late submission of rating reports to the General Assembly for final decision. Meanwhile, all efforts will be made to encourage dialogue between the Board and the 3 Federations on a possible way forward.

Regarding the deadline for the submission of candidacies for the FIDE offices at this year&rsquos Congress in Bled, the Board set the deadline at midnight (Swiss time) 7 August 2002 for the receipt at the FIDE Secretariat of all documents either by fax or by regular mail.

The Board approved titles for over the board play and noted in particular, the award of the title of Grandmaster to reigning European Women&rsquos Chess Champion WGM Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria.

The Board reconfirmed its commitment to support the ASEAN Chess Academy and, subject to the submission of financial details and the availability of funds to cater for some of its financial needs.

The Board noted with satisfaction the decision by the FIDE President to fulfill the financial commitments of FIDE Commerce to FIDE as well as the steps being taken by the President to strengthen the activities of the company. This includes the appointment of Mr. Casto Abundo as Director of the company. In addition, Mr. Abundo has been empowered to resuscitate the FIDE website.

Finally, the Board unanimously resolved to convey its deepest appreciation to the President of the Qatar Olympic Committee H.R.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamid Al Thani as well as the FIDE Continental President for Asia Mr. Khalifa Al Hitmi for the excellent arrangements laid out for the Board members at this meeting.
