IM Akshat Khamparia (IND) won the extraordinarily close GM group of the usual monthly First Saturday GM tournament in May 2018. He played a solid chess and remained unbeaten throughout the competition, finishing first among 3 players with 5,5 points at the end of the tournament, thanks for the Sonneborn-Berger Tie-Break.

7 points were needed to achieve a GM norm, but no one could reach it on this competition. Only one player was able to achieve an IM norm in the event.

Former U10 Asian Chess Champion CM Zuo Yifan from Shenzen, China reached his first IM norm with his 2nd place in the group. The 12 years old boy also played reliable and secure chess, and remained unbeaten just as Khamparia. It’s not impossible that this is the first step towards becoming a strong grandmaster.

IM Alex Astaneh Lopez (IRL) played without compromise, and beside the loss against the first two competitors, he stood up victoriously 4 times from the table, and also finished with 5,5.

There was a very interesting arbiters’ situation in the round 5 Khamparia-Li Bo game. The Chinese international master himself doesn’t speak English very well, and he also had trouble requesting a draw for threefold repetition according to the rules. Later he was checkmated, but 10 minutes after the game has finished, he informed the chief arbiter of the tournament, FA Gyomber Tamas that there was a 5 times repetition earlier in the game. After the CA processed the game into the tournament pgn, he confirmed that Li’s claim is valid (although a bit late), and before start of the next round, he set the result of the game as a draw according to article 9.6.1 of FIDE Laws of Chess. Khamparia appealed and the Appeals’ Committee agreed with him, because in the regulation they did not find enough evidence that this rule is retroactive. In the meantime FIDE Arbiters’ Committee also discussed the situation and agreed that the arbiter’s decision was correct. They decided that in terms of tournament standings, the Appeals’ Committee’s decision stands, so white won the aforementioned game, but for rating, it will be a draw. In the future however, it’s worth knowing that in similar situations 5-times repetition and 75 moves without capturing and moving a pawn immediately finish the game as draw, and everything happening after on the board is not valid.
